alloween! The most important kid/candy holiday of the year was upon us. We couldn't very well spend it in a remote anchorage. Since we were still in New Bern, we scouted out the historic district, full of old, restored homes as our trick-or-treating destination. It actually reminded us of our Queen Anne neighborhood back in Seattle. Both kids were cats, but very different kinds. Reed has traditionally been lukewarm on costume ideas but a very large, flat, foam cat head caught his eye in the aisle at Wal- Mart and it was love at first sight. Ava has a flare for the dramatic so chose a fanciful leopard cat mask, necklace and tail. She added some leopard print false eyelashes and a drawn-on cat nose and was ready to go! It was a beautiful evening, lots of other trick-or-treaters out in the cool fall evening, and both Ava and Reed filled their bags with lots of treats. Heading back to the boat, the candy trading went on well after Eric and I had fallen asleep. Another great trip was to the nearby Aurora Fossil Museum. The North Carolina coast was under the ocean several times in the past millennia and there are layers upon layers of fossils buried beneath the soil. A local phosphate mine digs for veins of phosphate and the sediment layers between are discarded. It was discovered that these layers are very rich in fossils - especially shark teeth! At the musuem, in addition to seeing the displays of some of the shark teeth fossils that have been found, there is a mound of fresh dirt is there for anyone to search through for their own shark teeth to take home. Reed was in search of a large prehistoric Megaladon tooth, however, he ended up finding something even more rare. It was a deformed - "pathological" mako shark tooth. The museum director was very excited to see it and gave him a special box to keep it in. I think Reed still would have preferred a larger tooth but this was pretty cool.
