| After a late breakfast, for our first day in DC, we headed up the the reflecting pool to see the monuments and memorials. Given that is was Sunday of Labor Day weekend, it was surprisingly empty in terms of crowds. Starting at the Washington Monument, we headed to the World War II memorial - a spectacular tribute to both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters of the war. The memorial to the signers of the Declaration of Independence was off the beaten path so we had that too ourselves. At the Vietnam War memorial, there were several survivors and family members finding loved ones, tracing their names, and wiping back tears. By the time we hit the Lincoln Memorial we had tired feet and rested on the steps and took in the view of the reflecting pool back to the Washington Monument. The Korean War memorial was our last stop for the day before walking along the Jefferson Memorial lagoon back to the marina. There is a historic landmark fish market right near the marina, it was fantastic to watch all the vendors with their piles of live crabs pack up bushels to the Labor Day crowds, likely looking to feed their families and friends at picnics and barbecues. We spent the evening discussing the history behind each site we visited, there is so much to learn from each of these places, we are determined not to rush our way through. |
