From Beaufort we had several fantastic days of travel and nights of anchoring. We were aiming for Myrtle Beach in order to get Ava on the plane to visit Karrie's parents in Wisconsin for a week or so. Some highlights were having sea turtles all around us in Tom Point anchorage - we could hear them surfacing all night long around the boat. In Price Creek anchorage, just north of Charleston, Ava and Reed caught several baby sharks (dogfish?) as the sun set. There were many storms nearby that evening although none reached us. The sunset and thunderheads made for a spectacular shadow on the sky. Anchoring north of Georgetown in Butler Creek, we all swam in the strong current and fished some more. That night, the starts and Milky Way were spectacular. On Father's Day, we traveled only a few miles north and anchored in Thoroughfare Creek, a popular spot with the local as there is a rare sandbar to swim from. We spent the day at the beach just lazing around in the river with the other boaters. Reed is perfecting his dinghy driving skills and took Karrie on a ride through the back creeks as did Eric and Ava later. We didn't swim too much from the boat as there are alligators in that neck of the woods. There were so many Osprey nests along this part of the ICW - the Wacamaw River. Many that we had seen on our trip south now had fledgling ospreys ready to learn to fly. Also different from our trip south in March was the preponderance of dragonflies - in every color, shape and size. They'd fly around and land on the boat all day and well into the evening. Beautiful! After making it to Myrtle Beach, we dropped off Ava and headed north the next day. It would be quiet without her for the next week or so but she was super excited to travel on her own for the first time. We caught up with the Robeck family in Carolina Beach State Park, which is just off the Cape Fear River. It was so lovely we all stayed for 3 days, exploring the park and its unique carnivorous plant life! Reed earned his Junior Ranger badge after two days of attending park programs and picking up trash to help clean the park. Reed and Owen did cast net fishing any chance they got and because the heat was still quite oppressive, we spent lots of time visiting and sharing sailing stories in the AC lounge. Ahhhh. After Carolina Beach, we had a lovely two-day trip up to Oriental, NC, which is very near where we purchased the boat . We can get our truck delivered to us for use while we got some boat work done and catch up with familiar faces. | |
