| After a few days off to rest our brains from all the information we were taking in, we again started visiting some of the fantastic (and FREE) museums of the Smithsonian Institution. Air and Space was a reminder of Seattle's Museum of Flight, but with more emphasis on space exploration. We spent time learning about the planets, rockets, deep space exploration, and the first lunar Apollo missions. Reed's favorite was the planetarium - with two great 1/2 hour programs about Stars and Dark Matter. At the Museum of American History, much time was spent exploring Julia Child's kitchen and influence on American eating. We also traveled through the history of American Presidents and First Ladies. The final stop at this museum was the Innovation Exhibit - with both Ava and Reed practicing their own invention making in the Spark Lab, a hand's on space just for kids. Finally, we had a great outing at the Museum of the American Indian. We met Lisa, Blair, Aden, and Talia for the afternoon to explore this newest of the Smithsonian Museums. Outside, a new installation was being created, including making bricks by hand. The kids were invited to give it a try - both found it a highlight of the visit. Also inside, we found a video and artwork of a Seattle artist, Preston Singletary, father of one of Ava's classmates. It was very neat to make the connection. In the kid's space, we all practiced our balancing skills on special boards to see if we could keep our sea kayak afloat in rough, arctic seas. The evening was finished with a great meal before we said our goodbyes to the Keithleys until we travel up this way again next year. Enjoy and thanks for following! |
